A "Taiwan Phenomenon" At The CMJ Music Marathon: 3 Bands, 3 Sounds [07 Sep 2011|05:11pm]

0klman

The CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival, New York City's largest and longest running music event, is known for its diverse artists, lively audiences, and in keeping with the Big Apple's own culture, international flavor. This year's 2011 CMJ Showcase will be no exception as three Taiwanese bands make their first appearance, bringing the sounds of Taiwan and their own individual styles to the people of NYC.
Dubbed "The Taiwan Phenomenon," the bands - Bearbabes, Echo, and 1976 - will make their first CMJ appearance from 8-10pm on Wednesday, October 19th at Dominion NY. The showcase is being organized by the Taiwan Government Information Office (GIO) and a-Peer Music Co., Ltd. So what should we expect from our friends from the East? I'm willing to put my money on an absolutely incredible and memorable experience.

Call for submissions: Absent Cause #5 – Dangerous Gifts [08 Aug 2011|10:25am]

Call for submissions: Absent Cause #5 – Dangerous Gifts

 Absent Cause
zine was established in 2008 as a venue for people from myriad cultures and selves, pushed to the outskirts and into the underground, to find each other, draw connections between their experiences, and gain strength for their struggles.

The term “Dangerous Gifts” is usually associated with the special contributions of people with mental illness / variance. But there are many kinds of dangerous gifts we experience and share: the person who chooses to wear a veil as an expression of culture or religion; gender or gender-less expression outside the male-female binary; being a fat person, a hairy grrrl, or having other physical characteristics outside mainstream acceptance; existing as a survivor in a social system that celebrates abuse and war; the choice to confront capitalism, racism, patriarchy and heteronormativity in a culture of submission; and so much more.

Absent Cause is seeking submissions on your experience of “Dangerous Gifts” for the forthcoming issue. Artwork, comix, photography, essays, poems, and SHORT fiction are welcome.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, September 30, 2011.

Explore the dark side with Absent Cause:
Underground cultures and hidden histories; feminist, gender-variant and queer sexualities, chosen families and radical politics; vampirism, the gothic, horror and the macabre; surviving abuse, coping with mental illness/dangerous gifts, self-harm and suicide.

download: TRAVIS RYAN (Cattle Decapitation singer) / DEATH BY A THOUSAND CUTS [12 Jul 2011|06:00pm]

teenageteenager
The long out-of-print TRAVIS RYAN / DEATH BY A THOUSAND CUTS split CD is now available for digital download @ http://chromepeelerrecords.bandcamp.com/album/travis-ryan-death-by-a-thousand-cuts

ABOUT THE RELEASE:
One of the more interesting pairings of harsh, electronic horror, upstart noise duo Death By A Thousand Cuts team up with CATTLE DECAPITATION vocalist Travis Ryan to transmit an hour of grim, nightmarish drone noise. Travis Ryan's four tracks open the disc with an edgy, paranoid ambience that mixes environmental buzzes and electronic hum with blurry theremin melodies and hushed buzzsaw tones, evoking the faint but discernible hum of electricity you feel when standing at the edge of an urban landscape in the middle of the night. Occasionally Ryan's droning dread lurches into a staticky overload that recalls the chopped up circuit burn of John Wiese, but more often drifts through a halogen-lit dreamworld similar to a grittier, urban take on Glass Throat Records atmospherics.

The other side of this split is haunted by Death By A Thousand Cut's nightmarish free electronic designs. DBATC's industrial hallucinations are conjured from noxious bass sinewaves and cloudy keyboard drones, curling upwards out of metal-on-metal carnage and blasts of laser-beam effects pedal violence, and the music becomes strangely beautiful, especially with the cosmic, Troum-meets-Bastard Noise insectoid frequencies of the final track "Approach Of The Black Claw".

STILL AVAILABLE from Chrome Peeler Records:
Unearthly Trance / The Endless Blockade "split" LP (doom vs. power violence)
Merzbow / The Guilt of... "split" LP (Japanese noise legend vs. EYEHATEGOD side project)
Mike IX Williams "That's What the Obituary Said" 7"+poster (EYEHATEGOD vocalist)

Lloyd Banks, Fred Da Godson, & Oun-P Perform At The The Bronx Knows Concert For HIV Testing [28 Jun 2011|03:31pm]

0klman

For the first time ever, the New York City Department of Health, NYC Knows, Hot 97 and its partners, hosted one of the most talked about concerts in New York: The Bronx Knows Concert for HIV Awareness.
The message of "Stay Safe, Get Care, & Get Tested" was conveyed through a series of PSAs that appeared in the greater NYC area.
The NYC DOH offered free tickets to the concert at the Paradise Theater in Bronx, NY, in exchange for getting an HIV test on or before June 24th -- the headliner of the concert being none other than golden child Lloyd Banks, who, in this past year, has become one of the most prominent forces in hip-hop...so much so, in fact, that none other than the NY Times named Banks (real name: Christopher Lloyd) "the most important rapper" in New York City.
And Banks, of course, kept his steady, stealthy pace at this performance: blazing through a 30 minute set in a deluge of sweat, he ran the gamut from old ("On Fire" & "I'm So Fly," both from his debut album HUNGER FOR MORE) to new ("I Don't Deserve You" & "Start it Up," both from his recent offering, HUNGER FOR MORE 2).
Banks, however, is at his best when he lets his guard down -- when he eschews the groupie-chasing "Blue Hefner" persona in favor of his true person: a wise "G" who has taken the road less traveled (which, as Robert Frost would say, makes all the difference) & has a bit of life experience to impart to the masses.
Other performances included Fred Da Godson, Oun-P, & several local area artists.

THE VANITY BELLES GIVE BACK TO NYC'S, THE BITTER END! [17 Jun 2011|03:48pm]

"Cosmo-Country" divas, THE VANITY BELLES™, have surprised the NYC music scene by choosing The Bitter End to hold their highly anticipated EP release show on Thursday, July 14th at 10pm. The band joins a long list of rising stars, including Lady GaGa, to site Bleecker Street’s historical Bitter End as an integral part of their rise to popularity, and have been overheard dubbing the venue “home." From the raw "folk punk" of her early albums through the jazz/funk grooves she created during her years touring with a five-piece band to the twists and turns of her current work as a solo artist, Ani's restless creativity continually leads her and her listeners into ever more exciting territory.

FINAL SOLUTION "All New Power" (90s NYC power-electronics) [22 Mar 2011|07:45pm]

Due to the FINAL SOLUTION "All New Power" cassette selling out in 3 days, the digital version is now available @

http://chromepeelerrecords.bandcamp.com/album/all-new-power

About the release:

CPR-14: FINAL SOLUTION "All New Power"
Re-issue of impossible to find 1990 demo from NYC power electronics legends. FINAL SOLUTION created some of the most raw and intense power electronics ever. They could be compared to "Great White Death" era WHITEHOUSE, but they really emit a hard New York ugliness that only an American-born group could bring.
